We top up our data packs; We recharge our devices; We renew our software subscriptions; We install regular updates…
Why should our CAREERS be any different?
“The future won’t belong to the most experienced alone. It will belong to those who adapt and continuously recharge/refill their skills throughout”.
Graduation will mark the beginning of learning – not its end.
Education will become a lifelong subscription, renewed through continuous learning, reskilling, and upskilling.
It will apply to everyone, irrespective of age, designation, industry, or years of experience. Whether you are 22 or 62, your ability to remain relevant will depend on how consistently you renew your knowledge and capabilities.
In fact, I believe the future will see professionals intentionally recharging their skills every two or three years. These periodic upgrades won’t be optional – they will become a natural part of career growth. The question will no longer be “How many years of experience do you have?” but “What have you learned new in the last three years?”
The challenge, of course, is knowing what to upgrade.
That requires us to continuously watch:
• Industry trends
• Emerging technologies
• Changing business models
• Evolving customer expectations
• New ways of working
Only then can we decide which skills need an upgrade and which new capabilities need to be added.
Interestingly, this analogy isn’t entirely new to me. Back in 2014, I wrote about careers needing updates just like software in my article, “Installing Career Updates… Please Wait.”
Perhaps the future of careers can be summed up in one sentence: Don’t just build a career. Build a habit of renewing it.
